Our Story
Green Cross India (GCI) traces its origins to 1995, when it began as a student-led environmental movement dedicated to tree planting and promoting environmental awareness. As our understanding of ecological restoration evolved, the initiative expanded into seed-ball campaigns, urban forestry, and community-based greening programmes, encouraging sustainable environmental stewardship and public participation.
This growing commitment to conservation naturally extended to forest ecosystems, biodiversity protection, and wildlife conservation, where we recognized the critical relationship between people, wildlife, and the environment. Working in the field revealed a significant but often overlooked challenge—snakebite and human–snake conflict, affecting rural communities, workplaces, institutions, and industries across India.
Responding to this need, Green Cross India broadened its mission by integrating scientific risk management, ethical wildlife rescue, snake safety education, professional training, and evidence-based snakebite mitigation. This evolution led to the establishment of the National Snakebite Initiative (NSI), bringing together conservation science, public safety, occupational safety, research, standardized protocols, and community preparedness into a unified framework.
Today, Green Cross India is a multidisciplinary organization working at the intersection of public safety, wildlife conservation, environmental sustainability, scientific research, and professional capacity building, developing practical, field-tested solutions for government agencies, industries, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and communities.
To ensure that snake safety is recognized, integrated, and institutionalized as an essential component of public safety, occupational safety, and environmental stewardship through standardized education, professional training, operational protocols, scientific research, and sustainable risk management—protecting lives while fostering ethical human–snake coexistence.
We envision a future where standardized snake safety becomes an integral part of public safety, workplace safety, and environmental stewardship, enabling safer communities and responsible coexistence between people and wildlife.
